Let me be radically transparent about what that looked liked for me:
- At 16, I began experiencing crippling depression in High School. Being in an educational format severely at odds with my ADHD, my inability to reach top marks in school, no matter how hard I studied, made my self-worth plummet to rock bottom. I began seeing a psychiatrist and ADHD specialist, and started on my journey of formally learning coping mechanisms and adaptations for surviving in a world built for neurotypical minds.
- At 17, a close family friend helped me write my first resume for college applications. It was beautifully written, and that resume, albeit a short one, was my first memory of a true feeling of self-worth and accomplishment. That's when I first learned how the power of a well-written narrative can change a person's entire view of themselves, and imbue confidence where little existed.
- By 21, I had a somewhat decent handle on my depression and anxiety, but knew that the ADHD would be a lifelong struggle. I began working in the corporate world in earnest, and struggled to find an outlet to the explosion of ideas and projects and energy I would bring to work each day. Looking back know, I can see clearly just how much of a handful I was to my managers; a prolific—yet exhausting—worker bee.
At the time, I felt misunderstood, stifled, and frustrated by the sloth-like pace of large companies. I flitted from job to job and industry to industry in an effort to find a career that would

Most important of all, you are ready to commit the time and energy it takes to make your big move. Getting ahead professionally is like a marathon: I can give you the ideal training regimen (the strategy), the ideal kit (your positioning narratives, CV, bios), and set you up on the ideal course; but you need to be the one to run it, to keep up the stamina, and to get yourself to the finish line.
